Self-Motivation is Not Enough & The Wheel of (Mis)fortune of Business

In the past, you must’ve watched or have seen Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, or the Price is Right.  So spin that wheel.  That’s what most entrepreneurs think business is like.  Spin that wheel and take a chance to see what happens right?  Who knows what you will get or can happen next?

People are motivated to win, but they think it is all hard work and that success is by chance.

However, in business, people aren’t motivated to win, but are trying to make things work.

Self-motivation is not enough.  What is needed is extrinsic motivation beyond yourself to succeed.

Become the better you.  And make others around you better too.  Better in life, better in living, have better experiences, and better opportunities.  You want to grow and others around you to grow too.

I always see that to succeed, I don’t do it for myself, but for the others around me.  Think of it as doing it for your spouse, for your kids, for your parents, etc.  By not achieving success and getting to where you need to be, you are denying those around you the true experiences that life has to offer.

For example, I would think that if I don’t succeed, another hungry kid in the third world would be starving, or another orphan is deprived of the basic necessities in life and are denied the opportunity to live happily, have a proper education, and to succeed in their lifetime.

Success has to go beyond yourself and whom and what that could be channelled to.  The success will have to translate to a better outcome for those around you, not just yourself.  If you just think that you want to be rich, to have a fast expensive car, more pricy watches, and more golfing for yourself, chances of success would be lower.  However, if you see it that if you can succeed, that means you can buy a better experience for your family such as better schools, a better home, more vacation and family time, then your chances of success would be higher.

This is comparing intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation.  It has to go beyond yourself that pushes you to do more not just for yourself but beyond to those who are around you.

You have to create the outcome that you want to see for your family.  You have to create the vision and outcome that you would want to push the world towards.  You don’t want to see another starving or homeless kid.  If one thinks they have it bad, there are a lot more who have it much worse.  Strive to help those who are much worse off as your extrinsic motivation to succeed.

You need to be the change, the light in the world that shines hope and provides an opportunity for others to have a chance for success too.

Remember this, I cannot push you to succeed, nor anyone else.  Only you are accountable for yourself and you do so by seeing your success have an outcome that touches and affects others.

And lastly, those who succeed the most, don’t have the mindset that blames others for their own failures, inactions, misfortunes, etc.  Those who blame anything, everything, and the revolving world for where they are today, will not succeed in the game of life and business.  Stop being stuck in the Wheel of (Mis)Fortune thinking that success is all chance.  You must be solely accountable for your own success and trying to find and create opportunity for yourself in your life and business.

So stop spinning that wheel.
